Dental Realizations

I visited my dentist today for I'm feeling a bit of discomfort whenever I'm biting. A little achy. Ever since, I've always had fear on losing my teeth. I dream about it a lot. I know some may say, it's bad luck. But for me, it's just simply a frustration. I'm scared because I smoke, and as they say, it's a big chance of you losing your teeth with nicotine. Though I rarely smile and show my teeth on pictures, I still want them intact forever.

My dentist since birth Dr. Riza de Leon, (who's the best dentist ever!!!) advised me that I do not have to worry anything besides the usual dental care. And of course, the mandatory cleaning every 3 months (not 6 months!). She explains how new dental technology had evolved and new treatments/services are now readily available to save one's teeth. All you need is a big investment. No prob. *Happy* So, if us ghels invests on $3,000 handbags, why not on a dental procedure ryt?

So anyways, my dentist advised me to switch to a lighter toothbrush because I have been over-brushing. Yes I'm guilty. Ok ok. And have regular cleaning because of the nicotine. OK.

I was so delighted that somehow, I got rid of my dentures/jacket fear. I am NOT against these people wearing jackets, implants or dentures. And I don't mind if you are wearing one. It's not something I laugh about. I am just not comfortable of having one. YET.

I also remember telling my dentist to start creating a form on my existing teeth, so when the time everything falls off, we know exactly the size of my previous teeth was. She was just LOLing hard. Ok ok. This is just praning moment... nuff

But what's really weird is, people don't talk about dental esthetics at all? I mean, I don't see tweets or facebook statuses that goes, "Going to have my teeth jacket repaired today! Excited!" OR "Finally getting my dentures!! Yey!" But it's OK to say, "My gawd, my hair is soo overly-damaged na and I soo need a hair repair treatment!"

Hahaha! Wala lang.. Just a thought.. For me, it's both esthetics, which deals with the nature of beauty. Same shit. :-)

BeauCon as the ghels say it (from Beauty Contest), is one of the most anticipated events in a baranggay (probably next to singing contest). This is one of my childhood frustrations, growing up in a city-vill, I never had a chance to participate or even watch in any gay pageant ever. Sometimes I wished I lived in a place like Pasay or Manila, where beau cons are being held almost every week! (Actually my cousin Alex Rada joined a beaucon when he was in college). I can still remember that he had won 1st runner up and if I'm not mistaken, Best in Swimwear (?).. :-) Aww, it's fun to play dress-up once in a while...

When Geof Gonzales' facebook was still up, I can remember him joining this beaucon in a baranggay in Manila where he lives. He was all glammed-up by Raymond Santiago and his friends. I was trying to look for the photos so I could share with you guys, pero di ko makita... So deadz.

Anyways, I was doing my normal morning facebooking/twittering when I saw this photos in facebook.

The Other Side of the Mirror

What do you see on the other side of the mirror every morning? I see a different person every single day. Today was a bit weird. I saw a person in a wedding dress. In couture, mind you. Does it mean bells are about to ring? Or is it just my frustration of being a bride? Oh well, we all want our own fantasy weddings in one way or another.

So,

Would you like a trail as long as hers?

Or would like to be a pregnant bride?

Or why not a military wedding with a war tank as you limo?

Or better yet, a zombie inspired wedding!

We all have our own eccentric wedding ideas, yet mine is a bit pa-sweet.. :-)

What would you do if you were asked to style an iconic diva?

My answer, is all of the above! Siguro I would really be deadma, kasi I don't really like Madonna after all. Atsaka, parang di naman din masyado mataas expectations niya, considering she's been in the business for 3 decades! Sawang-sawa na sa makeup yan! Oh well, it's kinda hard to tell unless you experience such thing. But one thing's for sure, manginginig ka talaga!

I was lucky to do Mandy Moore's makeup during her 2nd concert here in Manila last 2006. And I was suuupppeerr oveerrr to the maxxxx excited! Mandy Moore is one of my fave artists during my teenage years, and you can't say NO to this exclusive offer. I was thrilled to accept the project that was passed on me by Joan Quintas. As soon as we reached her suite door in Richmonde Hotel in Ortigas, I was shaking and couldn't help but puff for some more cigs. Buern, who was doing hair for her was excited as well. She was the one who opened the door and surprised that she was alone in a huge presidential suite. No entourage. No P.A. No Yaya, besides her band who was in a deluxe suite beside her room. She politely directed us to the living room where we should set-up and style her. Then I instructed Buern of the look that I wanted. I envisioned her 'Cry' music video look... She's very ma-chika pala and offered us drinks and snacks pa. And then she queued, 'Shall we start?'. SURENESS. As soon as she's seated, she immediately told us in a 'sweet' manner that she wanted a very simple look that is almost bare. NYARKS! After bringing my huge kit which includes my airbush kit! Eto lang! Chaka ha! So then I asked, sure ka? LOL. 'Yes my dear'. Anyways, she also wanted a simple hair. KERI. Gow.

Then she started telling us a horrific story happened to her a day before. So na-curious kame (kuno!). She had pala a presscon upon arriving her hotel. The organizers sent hair and makeup artists from a salon in Eastwood. According to her, she got murdered. They've used pancake on her face daw that she cannot even move a muscle. Basta in short. Sobrang kapal ng makeup. Done.

PAUSE muna. This is sooo frustrating. Narrating a story is a bull. Nakakapagod in ferrrnez.

Ok game.

So ayun. She didn't show up in her presscon kagad for at least 2 hours. I'm not sure why. But we all know for sure. So she requested for another team. There you have it.

So, when I heard Lady Gaga was coming. I texted all the possible peeps that may let me do her styling for the concert. Kaso, we don't know anyone who works for Ovation. Cecille Zamora texted that she brought her team na. So deadz.

So who's next???

Dark Underams?? Yes, There's solution....

I know, this is weird and a bit awkward discussing about 'kili-kili's' but I think it is also important for us ghels and gurls to know. I tried posting a dark underarm picture, pero di kinaya. Eeeky! Posted a safe and breezy photo instead! Haha! BTW, a reader twittered and suggested to discuss about dark armpits, so here you go. So why not diba?... I know what you're thinking gurl!! My underarms are not dark! Okkk! So if you think you do, then read on. If not, read on paren, kasi baka in the future you might need this info, you'll never know!

Cause #1: Shaving.

When you shave you cut the hairs off at, or just below, the surface of the skin. If your hairs are slightly darker than your skin color, they can give the appearance that your skin has a dark stain when it`s really just sub-surface hair.

What To Do About It: Stop shaving and try waxing instead so you get rid of the hair below the skin surface. Since the hairs aren’t lurking so close to the top of your skin, they won’t be as visible.

Cause #2: Buildup of dead skin cells.

Dark spots under your arms are the result of dead skin cells that are trapped on your skin.

What To Do About It: Exfoliate, preferably with a product containing lactic acid.

Cause #3: Antiperspirant and deodorant usage.

In theory, some ingredients in these products (perhaps the fragrance) could be reacting with the skin to cause discoloration.

What To Do About It: Try switching brands or use a deodorant instead of an antiperspirant. Or better yet, a deodorizing powder.

Cause #4: A medical condition called acanthosis nigricans.

This condition causes light-brown-to-black markings on the neck, under the arms, or in the groin. It can be related to insulin production or to a glandular disorder and it typically occurs in people who are overweight.

What To Do About It: Watch your diet to control insulin production.

Cause #5: Hyper-pigmentation.

This condition causes your skin to produce excess melanin pigment. It doesn`t usually affect armpits, so it’s a less likely cause.

What To Do About It: Use a skin bleaching cream to destroy the excess melanin. You can also try laser treatment to destroy the pigment.

Q: I have dark armpits. How can I get rid of this problem?
A: Do not apply anti-perspirants to your underarm area, use anti-fungal powder. Wax your underarms, do not shave them, and do NOT use hair removal cream

Q: I like to keep me armpits free of hair,so I shave and occassionally wax. Lately I have developed boils which resulted in acne in my armpits and my skin has turned dark. Please give me quick solution that can make my underarm look clear and fair. I often wear sleeveless dresses and now it has been curbed. I look around and I find women around me always shaving yet i dont see stubble or darkness. How come?
A: Results differ from person to person. You may have thicker or darker hair than them, or more sensitive skin. Stop shaving, and start waxing your underarms. Try and stick to the same person for waxing, and make sure she pulls the hair in one direction. The darkness is probably caused by shaving, while the boils could be caused by improper waxing. Also, if you wax regularly the hair growth will lessen and then the pimples will stop forming.

Q: Why does shaving cause the darkening of underarms?

A: Shaving causes hair to grow back thicker and darker, and this dark hair is often visible under transparent, light skin - which is what makes the skin look darker. Also, waxing removes dead skin, while shaving does not do the same. If you shave underarms regularly, you may want to scrub your underarm area with a pumice stone on a daily basis. This should help combat darkness to an extent.

Kalog & chikadora :-) BTW, she also graces this month's cover of FHM! It was shot in Boracay by Doc Marlon, styled by Bea Constantino and makeup by Jigs Mayuga. It suprises me when a celebrity that looks really intimidating can be really ma-chika and down-to-earth. Special mention: Iza Calzado, Bianca Gonzales, Alessandra de Rossi and course our sis Katrina Halili.

MAKEUP DISASTERS!!! (Part 1)

Have you encountered a makeup disaster? Or were you tagged on a photo with you looking like Ju-on or kabuki dancer? As a beauty artist, this is probably the first thing I notice more than a what a person is wearing or some nasty shoes! Especially with today's digital buddies such as camera phones and digicams, I'm sure you were able to catch at least one makeup oh-no-no's... I myself is afraid of the Sony Cybershot cams, for it gives any made-up face a certain 'glowww'! Here's recently tagged hideous photo of me in HK.

This 'Makeup Disaster' folder has been in my external hard drive since college. Yes dear. Ever since I got my Nokia 7610, me & Matt Gozun got addicted to self-portraits. (and our very famous rock-c*ck collection!)... And up to now, marami pa ring victims! Let's face it, we all want a little help when we're on such public display. But sometimes, we can't say if it's too much or not! :-) So, I'm finally revealing the best of the best from the collection!! Hee hee! I was actually kinda hesitant to post 'em, coz these are my friends! Pero sige na, deadma na! They've all learned from it anyway...

EVIDENCE # 1 (Bad Foundation)
This was taken in Boracay in 2004 by my cousin Rexcy (right) & with my bestfriend (left), na itago nalang natin sa pangalang Jerol Villadolid. Hahaha! I was LOLing hard (& LMAO pa) when I saw this photo from the digicam. As in! And until now, natatawa parin ako! But the good news is, Jerol's makeup had improved ever since this photo was taken and been laughed out by friends!

TIP: Makeup should be at its minimal while you are at the beach. The lesser pancake you have, the better. You may use a tinted moisturizer on your face and dab a bit of concealer on the desired areas such as your undereye, scars, blemishes, etc. The most important thing that you should remember is to use a concealer that matches your skin tone.

EVIDENCE # 2 (Concealer Madness)

A photo taken from the FACE 2 FACE Beauty Exhibit with me and good friend Rainier Mateos. This is actually a common makeup mistake, putting on the right concealer. Oh well, maganda na si sis ngayon, so he doesn't need makeup at all! Haha! Mwah

TIP: If your circles are recessed, you should choose a concealer that is one shade lighter than your foundation. If they are puffy, use a tad darker. You should choose one that provides good coverage and light texture. Also, you must take note that yellow concealers are good for covering up bluish or greyish circles, while a mauve or light blue concealer can mask brown eyebags.

EVIDENCE # 3 (Color Correct)
A photo with my friend Krissy Mira and Dale during my website launch @ Government 2 years ago. I always tell Krissy to get a foundation color of her skin tone and color, pero most pinay women talaga are used on wearing makeup that is (too much) lighter than their natural color. Well sometimes you can't blame society who thinks tan looks 'dirty' or not as cute :-) ... Oh well, so pasok ka ngayon sa makeup disaster sis

TIP: After reading this and you're in doubt, go buy yourself a new foundation!

EVIDENCE # 4 (Concealer as an all-over-the-face Product)

Eyyeeloveet!! This is Buern Rodriguez's attempt in doing the 'pale-look'! Haha! Pale face and lips to the Nth level! I love your bravery gurl and took the risk, but this look is a total FAIL! :-) Well well well, this may be a makeup disaster, but Buern's makeup has improved since THIS hideous photo! :-)! :-)

TIP: Simple. Don't use concealer all over the face. Especially the lips! :-)

Doncha love it? :-) These pictures are priceless! Now, do you have a makeup disaster photo to share? Go go go! For now, here's an essential guide on picking the PERFECT SHADE!

Consider your skin type! Before you pick the right shade, you need to find out the right formulation for your skin. Are you oily? Dry? Combination?
Pick the right formula. If you're oily, look for words like 'oil-free' or 'oil-control' on the bottle. Got dry skin? Go for moisturizing foundations with 'hydrating' or 'moisture-rich' wording on the bottle. For combo skin, determine if you're more oily or dry and go from there. Cream-to-powder bases work great for combo skin.
Select a few colors that seem close to your natural skin tone. Go for the yellow-based foundations, which look most natural on all skin tones. However, if you're very fair, try a pink, cooler shade.
Apply a couple dots of each color on areas of your jawline (the inner wrist or hand aren't the best spots, contrary to popular belief).
Take a good, long look -- near a window. Step outside, to see which foundation looks best in the natural light. The right shade is one that you can't see because it blends in so well.
